It has been a remarkable year at our Apiary with several of our own swarms caught and 2 at other locations. We briefly went up to 7 colonies onsite, twice and by the end of the season we will have given away 3 colonies and have 4 of our own. Two of those we are a little unsure about, but the other two are doing well. We have also talked two people through catching a swarm over the phone.

We had a very enjoyable meeting at Ali & James’ home in Marhamchurch on Sunday 11th October.
We took a look at Ali & James’ bees that they caught, as a swarm, this summer. It is a small colony but they were very active while we were there, bringing in pollen. They had been attacked by wasps quite badly, but the wasp numbers are thankfully reducing now. Ali and James are feeding them and we just hope they will make it through the winter. We were all very interested in the hive which they bought online and is quite different to Phil Chandler’s design, in several ways. It was great that all but one of the people present now has bees and we had a lively discussion, exchanging notes about how the season had gone. We had a very nice shared lunch and then all made our way home.
Balanced Beekeeping course 16th - 17th April 2016
With Phil Chandler
Cost £95 including refreshments and a simple lunch on both days.
This is being run and organised by us on this occasion. Most of the teaching will probably be at Welcombe Village hall, with the practical aspects being held at Nectans Meadow Apiary, as usual. The bookings are coming in thick and fast with 9 people already signed up and another enquiry pending. We are aiming at a maximum of 12 people, although might go up to 13 – 14 at a stretch. If anyone is interested in coming it would be best to let us know very soon. It is aimed at beginners, although participants are asked to read up about bees and beekeeping before coming, so they at least know the basics. Most of the people who have booked are local, so will probably become part of this group, which is good.
